If your Reels aren’t grabbing attention in the first 3 seconds, the problem probably isn’t your budget, it’s your hook.
Many advertisers struggle with knowing what to say or how to make people care. So let’s break down what makes a great hook and how to create a custom Hook Rate metric to measure which hooks perform best.
There are three main types of hooks, and you only need one strong hook to stop the scroll.
Hooks work because they make people pause, think, and see themselves in your story.
If you’re not sure where to start, try one of these proven hook formats:
1. Skepticism
“I didn’t think this trend would work… until it did.”
2. Absurd Alternative
“What if I told you to stop posting altogether?”
3. Problem Dramatization
“If your Reels aren’t grabbing attention in the first 3 seconds, the problem probably isn’t your budget, it’s your hook.”
Now that your hooks are stronger, let’s figure out how to create a custom Hook Rate metric to identify which ones perform best.
In META Ads Manager:
- Click Columns
- Select Customize Columns
- Scroll down and click Create Custom Metric
- Name it Hook Rate
In the formula box, enter:
3-Second Video Plays ÷ Impressions
Then change the format from Numeric to Percentage.
This metric shows what percentage of viewers watched beyond the first 3 seconds.
Click Save, then Apply.
Your new Hook Rate metric will now appear in your customized columns.
The next time you review your ad performance:
- Go to the Ads tab
- Sort your ads by Hook Rate from highest to lowest
- Identify which openings grab the most attention
You can even move the column closer to the front so it’s easier to see.
Remember: a higher Hook Rate means a stronger opening.
Use your top-performing hooks as inspiration for future creatives.
That’s it.
Now you can measure what grabs attention, not just what gets clicks.
Start using Hook Rate in Ads Manager and watch your next Reel perform better.
